Paper Gum Blossoms

Before you start, read the tutorial on fringed flowers.

You will need a fringing strip about 1.5 cm wide and 6cm long, and a centre 3mm wide and 4cm long. Gum blossoms come in a variety of shades from dark red to pale cream. You will also need a centre  strip. This can be a yellow green, yellow, dark cream or gold strip, 2-3mm wide and about 3cm long.
Along one edge, colour a thin line in gold. This will represent the pollen that sits at the very end of each spike. Turn the strip over and colour the same edge on the other side.

Don’t worry about being too neat as this edge will be finely fringed so any ragged bits won’t be visible. Finely fringe the strip from the coloured edge inwards to within 2-3mm of the opposite side. When the fringing is complete, glue the flower centre strip onto the unfringed edge of the fringed piece and roll up tightly.

Glue the end of the fringed strip down as you finish the strip. Bend the fringing outwards and fluff the fringing up.

To make the half blossoms, cut a shorter length of paper, still 1-5 cm wide, but only about 4cm long. Colour and fringe as before and roll up without a centre. Flatten the blossom and pull the fringing sideways.

Wrap  a small strip of green or brown paper around the base and glue the end down
