Gum nuts are quick and easy to make out of cold porcelain.
You will need:
small quantity of fresh cold porcelain
size 26 paper covered cake decorating wire
1/2 teaspoon cornflour
1 wooden toothpick
Flower dryer or an old colander (an old ricotta basket is great!)
Cut the wire into 3 pieces
Take a tiny piece of the cold porcelain (CP) and roll it into a ball. Elongate one end to make a tear drop shape.
Push the wire into the pointed end of the CP drop
Gently pinch the lower end of the CP onto the wire while slowly twirling the wire, dragging a little of the CP down the wire, smoothing it out as you go. You can leave them like this for berries or use smaller amounts of CP for spear shaped embellishments.
Dip the flat end of the toothpick into the cornflower and push into the top of the CP bud to form a deep cup. Roll the toothpick around a bit to widen the cup.
Remove the toothpick and set in a flower dryer to dry for a minimum of 48 hours. If you don’t have a flower dryer the cheap plastic baskets that you buy a kg of ricotta in work brilliantly! Turn the basket upside down and poke the end of the wires into the holes.
When dry paint the nuts with acrylic paint or spray paint. I srayed my first lot of nuts. It was fiddly, messy and smelly but was quick and had a lovely finish. However in future I plan to paint mine with acrylic paint. I have some spears that I made that I painted with sparkly paint and they turned out well. Alternatively you can paint them with glue and roll them in fine glitter for a more Christmassy look.
